Abstract
Purpose: Children with hydrocephalus can develop various ocular abnormalities involving anterior segment, posterior segment & extraocular movements. We report the various ocular abnormalities in children with hydrocephalus from 2019 to 2021.
Method: Retrospective case series to study the ocular manifestations in 47 children with hydrocephalus attending the special clinic for Hydrocephalus.
Results: Among the 47 children with hydrocephalus, the most common ocular findings were optic atrophy(8) & papilloedema(5). Other findings were strabismus in 11 ( exotropia 6, esotropia 4, pseudoexotropia 1, inferior oblique overaction 2, sensory amblyopia 1, and pseudoexotropia 1), nystagmus(4), epicanthal folds(3), deep socket(3), superior scleral show(2), microcornea(2), mongolian slant of eyes(1), and telecanthus(1).
Conclusion: Serious ocular findings are common in children with hydrocephalus. Regular ophthalmic evaluation helps to prevent visual impairment in such children.
