Abstract
To evaluate the incidence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in the Neonatal intensive care units of Medical College at the Rural area Methods: All babies admitted during study peirod in neonatal care unit with birth weight less than1700 gms and/or gestational age at birth less than 34 weeks were screened . Initial Binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy examination was done between 2nd and 4th week after birth by the retina specialist. Detailed neonatal and maternal history and findings were noted in a prescribed proforma.Results: 102 neonates were screened and 37 (36.27%)out of them had some stage of ROP.At the end of study it was noted that worst stage of ROP noted during entire follow up was Stage1 ROP was in 10 cases,Stage 2 in 7cases,,Stage 3 in 14cases, Stage 4 in 4 cases and Stage 5 in 2 cases.Laser photocoagulation was done in 14 cases.Conclusion: Incidence of ROP is high in rural areas due to improved neonatal care.Proper screening and treatment can prevent blinding complication
