Abstract
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a common retinal hereditary disease in the working age population and CME is an important cause of reduced vision in such patients. There is paucity of data available on the efficacy of treatments for CME associated with RP. We present a case of RP with CME who was treated with Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). A 39 year old male, presented with diminution of vision in both his eyes. BCVA was 6/36 OU and CME on multimodal imaging in both the eyes. He was offered Anti-VEGF injections however he refused. He underwent 10 sessions of HBOT. Subsequently on regular follow up till 02 years his visual acuity improved by two lines and the macular edema had reduced significantly.
HBOT, appears to be a promising modality for treatment of macular edema in RP, however larger studies are required. This report is first in the literature in documenting reduction of CME based on objective measurement of macular edema on optical coherence tomography.
