Abstract
Purpose-To describe the incidence and morphological features of PPCDD sign during phacoemulsification in PPC
Methods-Prospective case series included 67 eyes of 56 patients with PPC undergoing phacoemulsification. Outcome measures were incidence and characteristics of intraoperative PPCDD sign
Results:PPCDD sign observed in 86.5% eyes. 93.1% eyes showed complete disc defect; 6.9% eyes had partial disc defect. In 89.6% eyes the sign was seen after epinuclear plate and plaque aspiration. Amongst the 9 eyes which did not show PPCDD sign, 2 eyes showed en-bloc separation of plaque and cortical matter, in 3 eyes plaque remained adherent to the PC till the end of cortical aspiration and 4 eyes had intraoperative PCR during plaque separation. Incidence of PCR was significantly higher in eyes without sign (44.4% vs 0%; P-value <0.001) Conclusion:The visualisation of intraoperative PPCDD sign is suggestive of intact PC and associated with lower rate of PCR during phacoemulsification in PPC
