Abstract

To reduce the frequency & side-effects of intravitreal injections, suprachoroidal Triamcinolone (SCTA) is used for the treatment of macular edema. The long-term effects of SCTA on the IOP have been studied in the trials, however the immediate effect on IOP is not known.

20 patients with macular edema of varied etiology were enrolled. SCTA 4mg/0.1ml was injected in the suprachoroidal space with an innovative 26 G needle with an intracath sleeve & IOP was recorded with a tonopen at baseline, within 5, 30 min after injection, 1, 7 & 30 day.

The mean IOP at baseline was 13.30 and 36.40 mmHg within 5 min of SCTA. It was 23.80 and 16.10 at 30 min and day 1. (p< 0.00).IOP elevation was more in phakic patients (6 out of 20) at 5 min and 30 min (p< 0.00), however IOP did not differ at baseline and other visits. Although the IOP spike after SCTA is comparable as reported after intravitreal injections, yet care should be taken in patients with glaucoma and other optic nerve diseases.
