Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate intraoperative complications during phacoemulsification of mature intumescent cataract using lens decompression technique.
Materials and Methods: Prospective randomized study of 100 eyes of 100 patients. Participants with mature intumescent cataract scheduled for phaco were divided in two groups. In group1 preoperative anterior YAG capsulotomy was performed with 1 shot of 1.2 mJ. In Group2, a 24G needle on 2 cc syringe was pierced into the center of anterior lens capsule & liquid cortex was aspirated.
Results: In both group-50 eyes each, there were not a single case of Argentinian flag sign, rhexis extension. All patients underwent phacoemulsification & none of them were converted to MSICS.
Conclusion: Lens decompression techniques are a must learn for every cataract surgeon as it reduces the risk of Argentinian flag sign, rhexis extension, radial tears of the anterior capsule & conversion to MSICS during phacoemulsification of mature intumescent cataract.
