Abstract

3D printing is an advanced technology that is part of Fourth Industrial Revolution. Noting that there are shortcomings in Glaucoma Drainage Devices, in terms of cost, design and availability we planned to design newer implants. Using Computer Aided Design(CAD), we ideated and designed a few prototypes. These 3D models were then manufactured using stereolithography(3D printing) in the actual size for implant. The manufacturing process took only a few hours once finalized and allows for rapid design changes. This newer technology allowed the use of innovative valve mechanisms and plate designs with modifications in design before manufacturing. Multiple designs were drawn in CAD and manufactured by 3D printing. Outflow fluid dynamics were tested by observing the outflow of dye and implanting in animal eyes. This technology can be used to produce cost effective implants that can revolutionize filtration surgeries in glaucoma. It also allows easy access to implants for wetlab training.
