Abstract
Synopsis: Suturing maneuvers vary according to the various subspecialities in Ophthalmology. Oculoplasty is an interesting subspeciality where different sutures and diverse techniques are used based on the site, size, depth and the tissue strength. This video demonstrates the basic requisites of an ideal suture, classification based on their characteristics such as origin, absorption and fiber construction. Composition and properties of common sutures are discussed, which enable the surgeon in proper selection of sutures for specific cases. Needle shapes, uses and holding techniques are demonstrated. Common errors in suture handling are highlighted. Specific suturing techniques in certain surgical steps are demonstrated with schematic diagrams and videos. Precise and customized suturing helps in optimal wound healing and excellent cosmesis in oculoplasty.
