Abstract

Introduction

Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) syndrome is a potential visually devastating disorder. Retinal detachment is a known delayed complication.

Amidst the pandemic and restricted mobility, patients with red eye failed to reach the referral centers

and were treated locally.

We herein present surgical management of 2 HIV seronegative cases of ARN who presented to us

only after profound loss of vision.

Case reports

Two male patients, 56 year and 37 years presented with vitreous haemorrhage and total retinal

detachment. Intraoperatively, circumferential areas of focal necrosis and peripheral necrosed retina

upto the equator with occluded vessels were seen respectively. Polymerase chain reaction of vitreous

was positive for varicella zoster virus. They responded to oral antivirals and steroids with vision

improving from Hand Movement to 6/24 and 6/60 in silicon oil filled eye.
