Abstract
Purpose-To prove the efficacy of topical 5-FU in the treatment of OSSN.
Materials and methods-An 80 year old man presented with an elevated lesion in the right eye. It was diagnosed to be OSSN involving around 140 to 160°of limbus on medial side and the exposed conjunctiva medial to the limbus. As the lesion was very large, we wanted to reduce the size before performing any surgical intervention. 1% topical 5-FU was started four times per day for 1 week, followed by 3weeks off treatment. Therapy was restarted for a week. Patient presented with complains of toxicity like burning sensation in the eye which was treated with lubricants and off treatment for 3weeks. Drug was given for 1more week and lesion showed complete resolution with no signs of toxicity.
Results- Examination during each visit showed consistent reduction in size of lesion. On post treatment 3months follow up, no recurrence of lesion was noted.
Conclusion-Topical 1% 5-FU is efficacious & safe in the treatment of OSSN.
