Abstract

Background: Intraocular foreign body as a result of trauma to the eye can present with a spectrum of clinical findings, pathological course, outcome and visual prognosis. Ocular trauma is a leading cause of visual loss worldwide with traumatic cataract being the commonest; however, the incidence of a retained intra lenticular foreign body (ILFB) presenting with only traumatic cataract is relatively uncommon.

Methods: A 30 year old male presented with foreign body entering right eye 10 days back and blurring of vision since 2 days. The vision was 6/18 and slit-lamp examination revealed an iris hole, rosette cataract, ILFB. Patient underwent ILFB removal, phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in a single sitting.

Result: Postoperative period was uneventful with a visual outcome of 6/9.

Conclusion: Lens can act as a shield, preventing projectile foreign body invasion into posterior segment. Precise extraction of lens and foreign body can provide excellent prognosis in cases of ILFB.
