Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate changes in corneal curvature by releasable sutures of trabeculectomy surgery.
Methods: A prospective, randomised study, conducted over a period of 18 months. 40 consecutive glaucoma patients undergoing first-time trabeculectomy were enrolled. Assessment of changes in corneal curvature was done immediate post-operatively (1 week), after releasable suture removal (6 week) and long term (3 months). Central and total keratomery was assessed.
Results: Anterior corneal curvature showed with-the-rule astigmatism in both box (BRS) and shoe-lace (SRS) type of releasable sutures. Post suture release, decrease in WTR astigmatism occurred. SRS showed complete recovery of WTR astigmatism, while residual astigmatism remained in BRS. Corneal topographer is more sensitive to changes in peripheral cornea, thus superior for assessment. Its prudent to phase subsequent cataract or refractive surgery after 3 months, post stabilization of keratometry.
