Abstract
There are no guidelines concerning safest and most efficacious anaesthesia for patients undergoing 23G Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV). A retrospective review of 35 Patients (17 Males, 18 Females), planned for PPV for indications other than retinal detachment. Pain perception of participants evaluated using Questionnaire. After topical anaesthesia with drops of Proparacaine 0.5%, toothed Lims forceps is used to grip the conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule followed by a small incision to expose the white sclera in inferonasal quadrant. Injection is performed using a blunt 23G, bent cannula with 5ml of 2% lignocaine. The mean surgical time was 34.0 min. There was very limited akinesia during the procedure. There were no anaesthesia related complications. 97.1% reported no pain during surgery. Chemosis and conjunctival haemorrhage were common without intraoperative problems. Sub Tenons block provides adequate analgesia for comfortable and safe 23-gauge PPV with high patient acceptability.
