Abstract

A giant intraocular foreign body, especially metallic, poses several challenges and is often associated with poor post operative outcome.

We report a case of a 21 year old factory worker with a corneal tear with a 11.5 mm metallic intraocular foreign body enlodged at the macula. Through this case we highlight the importance of precise corneal suturing technique and primary care, the time-sensitive nature of management of a metallic foreign body and most importantly the multidisciplinary surgical management of a patient with a giant intraocular foreign body aided by a temporary keratoprosthesis resulting in a good surgical outcome. We also emphasize the need of primary prevention and public awareness in cases of occupational eye injuries.
