Abstract
PURPOSE:To report a case of alkali injury & management of the same.
METHODS:A 28-year-old male patient presented with complaints of LE watering, redness, pain for 2 hours following caustic soda injury in left eye in morning while working. An immediate eye wash was followed by assessment of ocular surface involvement as per Dua’s grading on slit-lamp. Visual acuity post normal saline wash was counting finger from 3 meter in LE. Patient was started on topical & systemic therapy with close follow up & subsequently was subjected to tenon-plasty & amniotic membrane patch graft.
RESULT:Ocular surface epithelization was achieved with medical therapy aided with tenon-plasty & amniotic membrane patch graft. Visual acuity was gained to 6/12 in LE at 3 months of follow up.
CONCLUSION:Ocular surface burns with alkali agents like caustic soda can cause severe damage to eye. Immediate eye wash followed by appropriate medical therapy with timely surgical intervention can prevent blinding sequels.
