Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Once rare, mucormycosis has now become an epidemic amidst the COVID pandemic. Individuals with immunocompromised status or with chronic debilitating diseases are mainly affected. As it is a rapidly progressive disease with high mortality, early suspicion & rapid diagnosis determines the outcome of disease.
METHODOLOGY:A cross sectional study was conducted from June 2021 to august 2021 on 50 patients with mucormycosis admitted in a tertiary care hospital. Patients aged 18 & above, with clinical & imaging features, with HPE confirmation were included. Demographic data, diagnosis of & treatment during COVID, diabetic status, other co-morbidities & onset of first symptom of mucormycosis were noted. These factors are correlated with severity of disease.
RESULT: Diabetes remains as a strong predisposing factor with higher levels of HbA1c being associated with the disease. Steroid usage (oral or intravenous) also showed association. Serum ferritin also was significantly higher.
