Abstract
Mucormycosis,a devastating fungal infection, invades the nasal cavity, sinuses, orbits,CNS,skin,GIT & lungs. An increased incidence of Mucormycosis predominantly Rhino orbital is reported in India during this Covid 19 pandemic, especially among patients with Uncontrolled Diabetes mellitus & Immunocompromised states. We report a case series of 5 patients who clinically presented with Unilateral Orbital cellulitis with loss of vision & classified as stage 4 ROCM based on radio imaging. One of the proposed treatments for Stage 3 & 4 ROCM is Orbital Exenteration. With aggressive measures like Intravenous and retrobulbar Liposomal Amphotericin B,Functional endoscopic sinus surgery & Neurosurgical intervention, there was a dramatic clinical resolution of Orbital cellulitis with an overall improvement in the patients general condition. A prompt multi disciplinary approach saved the life of the patients with organ salvage thus obviating the need for a mutilating procedure like orbital exenteration.
