Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of intracameral mydriatics (tropicamide 0.02%, phenylephrine 0.31% and lidocaine 1%) and compare it with standard topical mydriatics in phacoemulsification
Method: 80 patients planned for phacoemulsification were divided into 2 equal groups. Group A received 0.2 ml of intracameral mydriatics just after first incision and group B received preoperative topical mydriatics. The efficacy was measured by pupil size, stability of mydriasis and patients comfort.
Result: At the beginning of capsulorhexis, the mean pupil diameter was >7mm in both groups. The mean change in pupil size from capsulorhexis to end of surgery was -0.25±0.67 mm and -1.65±0.85 mm respectively. Patients in intracameral mydriatics group reported statistically more comfort than group B during surgery (p=0.023).
Conclusion: Intracameral mydriatics are safe and effective alternative to preoperative topical mydriatics for prompt onset of pupil dilation and stable mydriasis intraoperatively.
