Abstract
Aim:To determine prevalence of dry eye among smokers and correlate severity of dry eye with pack year.
Method: A cross sectional study was undertaken in tertiary care eye hospital from January 2020 to January 2021.After fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria,100 smokers of aged 20-60 years were recruited in study.History taking, detailed slit lamp examination of anterior and posterior segments were done.Dry eye status was assessed by OSDI questionnaire, ST-1,TBUT values.Severity of dry eye and number of pack year were correlated.
Result:The mean age+/-SD of participants was 55.12+/-5.64.Of 100 participants,70%,30% belong to males and females respectively.71.4% of males,16.6% of females belong to dry eye(p<0.05).55% have OSDI score>12, 50% have ST-1 value < 10mm, 57% have TBUT value <10 seconds. Severity of dry eye was positively correlated with number of pack year(P<0.005). Conclusion:Smoking affects ocular surface deleteriously, hence measures should be taken to prevent smoking.
