Abstract

Aim:To evaluate visual outcome and complications after implantation of multifocal versus monofocal intraocular lens(IOL) in children above 5 years age.Methods:Prospective study of children with bilateral developmental cataract between 5-12 years, was divided into 2 groups- Group A(4 children,8 eyes) with multifocal IOL and Group B(8 children,16 eyes) with monofocal IOL implantation in both eyes.Outcome measures of best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) for distance and near,stereopsis,contrast sensitivity and complications like posterior capsule opacification(PCO) and glare were analysed.Results:At 1 year follow up,both groups showed improvement in BCVA for distance with no difference in contrast sensitivity.BCVA for near and stereopsis was better in Group A (75%) as compared to Group B(62.5%).Incidence of PCO was similar in both groups(37.5%).Conclusion:Multifocal IOL in children above 5 yrs with bilateral cataract makes spectacle independent for near vision and provides better stereopsis
