Abstract
Introduction:
This study aims to assess the pattern of ganglion cell layer (GCL) loss in compressive optic neuropathy (CON) due to chiasmal compression. OCT is an objective and repeatable method of assessing the visual damage compared to visual fields.
Methods:
Patients referred from the neuro-surgery department with radiologically diagnosed lesions around the sellar region underwent visual fields and GCL thickness on OCT and were compared with age matched controls.
Results:
There was a significant difference in the GCL thickness in cases and controls in all quadrants except the outer temporal quadrant. There was a significant nasal temporal quadrant asymmetry among cases which was also found in the cases with normal visual fields compared to healthy controls.
Conclusion:
The nasal temporal quadrant asymmetry of GCL thinning can be an indicator of pre-perimetric CON.
