Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the response to botulinum toxin A injection in epiphora due to lacrimal outflow obstruction.
Methodology: Prospectively, 2.5IU of botulinum toxin A was injected into the lacrimal gland of 30 eyes. The subjects were followed for 6 months using MUNK’S SCORE (0-4) and other subjective scores. Quantitative parameters like Schirmer’s test, TMHT, TBUT were recorded at baseline and on follow-ups. Results: The mean age was 44.7 years. Amongst 30 eyes, the most common site of obstruction was bi-canalicular block (43%). Schirmer’s tests, TMT, Munk’s score showed a significant decrease in epiphora at 1, 3 and, 4 months (P values <0.001). Similarly, subjective scores showed resolution of symptoms between 1 to 3 months. The most common side effects were papillary hypertrophy (50%) and ptosis (26%). Conclusion: Botulinum toxin A injection provides a transient relief in epiphora for at least 4 months and can be considered a short-term treatment strategy wherever feasible.
