Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate outcomes of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma (OR) by multimodal management
Methods: Retrospective case series of 40 OR managed with surgery + chemotherapy X 3 + stereotactic radiotherapy 4500-5500cGy + continued chemotherapy X 6. Eye salvage, local tumor control, metastasis were outcome measures. Results: Mean age-8.6 (range 0-40) y. Common clinical presentations were proptosis in 22 (55%), diminution of vision-9 (22%), pain-6 (15%), ptosis-3 (7%). Presentation was acute-17 (42%), subacute-14 (35%) or chronic-8 (20%). Surgery was incisional biopsy in 27 (67%), debulking in 3 (8%) and excision biopsy in 10 (25%). Histopathology was embryonal in 25 (63%), alveolar in 12 (30%), botryoid in 1 (3%) and anaplastic in 2 (5%). 3 (7.5%) needed orbital exenteration, local tumor control was achieved in 40(100%) and 3 (7%) patients succumbed to metastasis at a mean follow-up of 42m.Conclusion: Multimodal treatment provides excellent chance of local tumor
control and life salvage in OR.
