Abstract
Purpose-Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy(HBOT) reduces tissue hypoxia and acidosis, otherwise favourable for growth of fungus. We aim to use this attribute to treat patient of post COVID-19 associated rhinoorbitalcerebral mucormycosis.Methods- Post COVID-19 patients developing mucormycosis were treated with intravenous Amphotericin B and retrobulbar amphotericin B and/or orbital surgery. Later patients were advised HBOT for 10 sessions. MRI was done pre and 2 weeks post HBOT and were compared.Clinical improvement were also noted.Results- Out of 10 patients who underwent HBOT, 2(20%) patients showed complete resolution of orbital inovolvement, 6(60%) showed improvement disease, 3(30%) showed same interval change. Ocular movements were seen to be improved in 2(20%) . 2 patients had ear bleed as side effect in between sessions which improved with local treatment.Conclusion- HBOT shows promising usage in patients with mucormycosis and can be used as an adjunct with good prognosis.
