Abstract
Purpose: The study aimed at evaluating the expression of survivin (BIRC5) in retinoblastoma and to determine whether this expression is associated with histopathological high-risk factors (hHRFs) and response to chemotherapy.
Methods: This was a retrospective clinicopathologic case series which included patients who underwent enucleation for retinoblastoma. Immunostaining for survivin was performed in all. Multiple univariate analysis was performed using Fisher’s exact test and paired-t test.
Results: The study included 65 patients who underwent enucleation for retinoblastoma (primary,39; secondary 26). Nuclear survivin score was associated with poor differentiation (p<0.1), massive choroidal invasion (p<0.05), retrolaminar invasion (p=0.05), ciliary body and AC involvement (both, p<0.05). Survivin expression was higher in chemotherapy-resistant tumors. Conclusion: Expression of survivin significantly impacts prognosis and is thus a promising prognostic markers in retinoblastoma.
