Abstract
PURPOSE- This study was conducted to address the visual sequelae of methanol poisoning and to determine effect of amount of methanol ingested on the ocular findings and also to examine the effectiveness of early presentation.
METHOD– 15 cases of acute methanol poisoning presented to the emergency department with acute methyl alcohol poisoning who were treated with supportive therapy and systemic steroids. A complete history was taken regarding the time and amount of alcohal ingested, thorough examination including fundus examination was done.All patients were aggressively treated with supportive therapy and systemic steroids .
RESULT-Fundus examination revealed hyperemic disc, retinal edema, papilloedema, few developed macular edema,some had tortuous ,attenuated blood vessels, and later 2 of these patients developed
optic atrophy.
CONCLUSION-Early presentation with prompt treatment has a significant role in preserving and improving visual acuity.
