Abstract
It is a prospective randomized study conducted on sample size of 154 (77 in Small Incision Cataract Study- group A; 77 in Phacoemulsification- group B) of age group 40-80 years. After detailed examination and specular images patients randomized in 2 groups. After surgery, at each follow up endothelial cell density (ECD) noted till 6 weeks and compared with baseline values. Results: In group A; mean baseline ECD was 2589.98 ±166.71 and 521.62 ± 19.11; at postoperative 6th week ECD was 2358.54 ± 170.86 (difference is 231.43 ± 56.28); in group B; mean baseline ECD was 2617.17 ± 192.40; at postoperative 6th week was 2391.21 ± 201.69 (difference is 225.96 ± 61.34). So the loss of ECD in group A was 8.9% and in group B 8.6%. The difference of ECD from baseline to postoperative 6 week in both groups was not significant(P>0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant difference in corneal endothelial loss between small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification.
