Abstract
Aim:To report our experience with the use of episcleral plaque brachytherapy using Ru-106 plaques for different ocular tumours with regard to globe salvage,tumour-control, visual outcome and complications. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 54 patients who underwent plaque brachytherapy at our centre from January 2017 to June 2020.Results: The overall globe salvage rate was 83.33% (45/54) and tumour control rate was 79.62% (43/54).The tumour control rate at 1 year was 75%(9/12) for retinoblastoma,66.66%(6/9) for choroidal melanoma,62.5%(5/8) for OSSN,100% (12/12) for benign intraocular tumours. The Visual acuity of patients was largely maintained and complications encountered in our cohort was tumour recurrence (16.66%), retinopathy (5.55%) and one death due to distant metastasis (1.85%).Conclusion:The results of this retrospective study confirm the effectiveness of ruthenium 106 plaque brachytherapy as a globe salvaging treatment option for different ocular tumours.
