Abstract
Introduction
Mucormycosis commonly effects immunocompromised patients. The angio-invasive nature of this fungus leads to thrombosis, tissue necrosis, thereby minimizing the local availability of systemic antifungals. To combat this retrobulbar injection with Amphotericin – B can be considered prior to exenteration.
Methods
Case series of 5 post covid Rhino orbital mucormycosis patients in whom endoscopic sinus surgery and orbital debridement had already been done with systemic antifungals. These presented with persisting ocular problems. They were given Retrobulbar injection of Amphotericin – B.
Results
Out of 5 cases, improvement of vision from CF 2mt to 6/60 seen in 1 case.Amount of proptosis, ptosis congestion,Chemosis and ocular movements improved in 3 cases
Conclusions
Immediate initiation of systemic anti-fungals,surgical debridement are the basis of treatment. In case of progressive orbital disease, retrobulbar amphotericin B can be considered as an option prior to exenteration
