Abstract
Intraocular foreign body may traumatize the eye mechanically, introduce infection or exert other toxic effects on intraocular structures and urgent removal is warranted. A 35 year old male presented 7 days after an injury to left eye with an hot iron projectile from a grinding machine. On presentation, the visual acuity was 20/40. Entry wound was in the temporal cornea which was secured with one suture. Anterior segment was normal and lens was clear. A foreign body was seen in the mid vitreous cavity with a otherwise normal fundus which was confirmed on Ultrasonography and CT scan images. Patient was taken up for lens sparing pars plana vitrectomy with extraction of foreign body through a sclerotomy with the help of magnet. Vitreous biopsy did not reveal any organism. On discharge, the visual acuity was 20/63. We report a case where an iron projectile caused minimal ocular damage and delayed removal caused no significant damage.
