Abstract
Purpose: To predict the average number of surgeries required for a resident to gain competence in MSICS based on the ICO-OSCAR rubric
Methods: Prospective cohort study. 2021 MSICS procedures performed by18 residents were analysed. The first 15 procedures and every tenth case thereafter were assessed with the OSCAR tool by the trainer. According to the ICO-OSCAR rubric a score of more than 72 implied competence.
Results: Mean age of the residents was 27.8 years. Using the generalized estimation equation, the predicted number of surgeries needed to get an OSCAR score of 70, 80 and 90 were 67, 119 and 172 respectively. Factors associated with a higher OSCAR score include increased surgical procedures and female gender. Surgical complication rate was 3.06%.
Conclusion: Rather than use complication rates, OSCAR tool (score 80) which assesses quality at each step, may be used to recommend minimum number of MSCIS procedures required (119) for residents to gain competence.
