Abstract
PURPOSE: To assess demographic factors, prevalence of keratoconus (KC) in patients with Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and evaluate the characteristics of KC associated with VKC.
METHODS: The study included 46 eyes of 23 patients with VKC presenting at a tertiary center from May to August 2021. They were examined by slit lamp and Placido disc-based videokeratography. Topographic evaluation was done by Modified Robinowitz-McDonnell test; central corneal power > 47.2 D, infero-superior asymmetry >1.4 considered having KC.
RESULTS: Mean age of presentation was 14.6±4.8 years, included 70% males. 74% had palpebral and 26% mixed VKC. Mean central corneal power was 47.3D±5.4D and mean IS asymmetry was 2.8D±0.6D. The prevalence of KC was 56%. Complications like hydrops and corneal scarring noted in 11% patients.
CONCLUSION: VKC is a predisposing factor of KC. Videokeratographic screening of VKC patients allows early detection of KC to facilitate timely management.
