Abstract
Objective- to investigate the association between oral contraceptive (OCP) use and cataract prevalence in rural India. Methods-175 female, age ranging between 35 to 45 years, attended at OPD from the 2015- 2017 with posterior sub-capsular cataract included in the study. Causes of early cataract were scrutinized. Results- 135 females had a history of taking OCP in the past. 40 patients had no such past, Duration ranging from 6months to 5 years. The interval between last OCP intake and the hospital visit ranging from 10 to15 years. They don’t have any other positive history. Conclusion- OCP use may be associated with increased risk of posterior sub-capsular cataract among middle aged females. Duration and the interval play an important role. Female with PSCC, should be screened for OCP intake because it also has neuro-ophthalamic, vascular, retinal and macular, aqueous humor dynamic, corneal and color vision effects. Patients should be aware regarding this long term effects of OCPs
