Abstract

INTRPDUCTION: Venomous snakes are categorized into 4 families, i.e. Colubridae, Elapidae, Viperidae&Atractaspididae. Spitting cobras, a member of Elapidae family. Venom production from modified salivary gland (Durvernoy&Nuchal gland).

CASE REPORT: A 24 years old male patient came to the hospital with chief complaints of redness, watering &blurring of vision in left eye since 30 minutes. History of spit of cobra venom in left eye 40 minutes back. VA in right eye 6/6 &left eye 6/6 partial. In left eye conjunctival congestion, chemosis&diffuse corneal epithelial defect.

DIAGNOSIS:Snake venom ophthalmia – left eye.

TREATMENT: Irrigatedwith saline for 30 minutes & topical antibiotics, antihistamines, lubricant eye drops.patient recovered well within a week with left eye 6/6 vision.

CONCLUSION: Snake venom ophthalmia caused by spitting cobras. Immediate eye irrigation with tap water or saline to remove the venom so less damage to the conjunctiva and cornea, if not done may lead to blindness
