Abstract
BACKGROUND:India accounts TBcases about 2.64millions with incidence of193in2019 WHO.NTEP provides daily dosage of ethambutol according to body wt of patients .It is a cause of concern regarding ocular toxicity of ethambutol.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:Early detection of ocular changes due to ethambutol toxicity and early stoppage of it from further ocular damages.STUDY DESIGNS:Prospective observational study.METHODS:Both eyes of 53newly diagnosed TBpatients were examined prior to start ATDs,4,8wks and anytime within 8wks of sudden ocular complaints.VA,color vision,optic disc,field of vision,IOP were noted.RESULTS:Decrease in VA was seen in10eyes ,impairment in color vision in12eyes,optic disc abnormalities in 6eyes and visual field changes in8eyes.The defects were bilateral.Patients with ocular changes stopped ethambutol and showed significant improvement later.CONCLUSION:6patients were found with ocular changes due to ethambutol toxicity.So early detection of ocular changes has great value.
