Abstract
Background : IOP spikes in the early period after cataract surgery causes pain, corneal edema, optic disc damage, particularly. The main cause of postoperative IOP rise is retained OVD in the eye, which causes a mechanical obstruction of trabecular meshwork .
Objectives : To compare the effect of two OVDs (2% HPMC and 1% Sodium Hyaluronate) on Intraocular pressure after SICS.
Methodology : This is a prospective observational study of 8 months duration including 100 patients. 50 received 2% HPMC and rest got 1% Sodium Hyaluronate. IOP was measured 6 hours,24 hours and 1 week after SICS.
Results : Mean IOP increased by 4.08mm Hg in the HPMC group and by 8.2mm Hg in Sodium Hyaluronate group. In both group the rise of the IOP in 6 hour post operative period was found to be significantly higher than the before. 24 hours and 1 week post-operatively the rise was not found to be significant.
Conclusion : Sodium Hyaluronate causes significant IOP rise than HPMC in early post operative period.
