Abstract
Aim:To compare and evaluate surgical outcome between autologous blood serum alone(ABS) and with cauterisation(ABS-C) in the management of pterygium. Method:Two groups of 55 and 57 eyes with primary pterygium underwent excision with conjunctival autograft fixation using ABS (gr1)and ABS-C (gr2) respectively.A retrospective comparative analysis was done. Results:We included a total of 112 eyes.Duration of surgery in gr1 was11.2± 2.1M &10.2 ±1.8 M in gr2.The recurrence was noted in 3 eyes in Gr1(5.45 %) and1 (1.75%) in Gr 2.Other complications included graft edema in (44.6%) ,SCH in (50%) , graft retraction in (50%),graft loss in (7.3%) cases in group 1,and (55.2%),(50%) , ( 22.4%) ,(3.5%) in group 2 respectively. Conclusion: Graft fixation in pterygium surgery using low cost procedures with autologous blood serum alone or with cauterisation proves to be safe and successful method. An additional step of fixing the graft to the cut conjunctival margin by cauterisation proves to be safer.
