Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Essential Blepharospasm is an idiopathic disorder characterized by bilateral eyelid twitching or frequent blinking, due to involuntary spasm of orbicularis oculi. Precipitating factors are stress, bright light, ocular surface diseases.
CASE REPORT: A 58 year old male patient came to opd with complaints of frequent blinking, eyelid twitching, photophobia in both eyes, on 3rd postoperative day of phacoemulsification cataract surgery, done to right eye 1 1/2 year ago. Chronic smoker & alcoholic. Diagnosed as Essential Blepharospasm associated with post surgical maladaptation syndrome of cataract surgery. Treated with Botulinum toxin once in every 6 months. Patient received 3 injections & symptomatic relief found.
DISCUSSION : Botulinum A toxin is the treatment of choice & recommended every 3 – 6 months based on the severity. Cataract surgeons should be aware of this condition especially symptoms like photophobia & eye pain before & after cataract surgery.
