Abstract
Purpose-Acute leukemias commonly present with ocular features of anaemia and thrombocytopenia in contrast to our case presenting with proliferative retinopathy.Method-A 15 year old boy diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia complains of sudden painless diminution of vision in both eyes for 5 days.Visual acuity was counting fingers 5 metres in right eye and 6/18 in left eye.Anterior segment normal in both eyes.Fundoscopy showed vitreous haemorrhage, focal tractional retinal detachment, preretinal haemorrhage in right eye and sub ILM haemorrhage in left eye.OCT and B scan had similar findings. Result-He underwent pars plana vitrectomy in right eye with laser photocoagulation to avascular retina.Postoperative topical antibiotics, cycloplegics and steroids was given.Conclusion-Proliferative leukemic retinopathy develops in chronic leukemias due to retinal nonperfusion. Our case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting with features of chronicity suggests the rarity of this occurrence.
