Abstract
Ophthalmomyiasis is infestation of eye by fly larvae. We report a case of 60 year old male beggar, brought with maggots in eye.He was conscious, emaciated, chronic alcoholic.VA could not be tested as he was not oriented.Right eye was unremarkable.Left eye had maggots, lid edema, conjunctival congestion, chemosis, superficial punctate keratitis.Corneal haze precluded fundus view.Around 50 larvae were extracted.Systemic & topical antibiotics, anti inflammatory, analgesics, antihelminthic were started.Next day it was noticed that buttocks & lower back were infested too.He had low HB & platelets, deranged LFT,RFT & COPD. His health worsened in spite of necessary intervention & expired on 3rd day due to septicaemia. This case report alerts ophthalmologists to consider general physical & systemic evaluation in ophthalmomyiasis on 1st day of presentation, especially in debilitated to look for other areas of infestation & signs of comorbidities for appropriate timely management to prevent deterioration.
