Abstract
Aim: To compare sub tenon and peribulbar blocks in terms of efficacy, complications and comfort for patient and surgeon.
Methodology:
Prospective randomized control study in patients undergoing elective cataract surgery. Group A, n=40 (sub tenon block) and group B, n=40 (peribulbar block). Combination of lignocaine Plus bupivacaine with hyaluronidase (5-6ml) is used. Pain during injection, surgery and after surgery was assessed using numerical reporting scale (NRS).
Result:
80 randomly selected eyes were given either peribulbar or sub tenon block. The analgesic effect during the injection (P = 0.66) and during surgery (P = 0.49) was comparable in both. The akinetic effect at 6 minute (P = 0.43) was also similar in both methods. Need of supplementation of drug was noted with peribulbar anaesthesia. During surgery no severe pain in both group.
Conclusion:
Sub tenon block is safer as compare to peribulbar block, but in terms of analgesia and akinetic effect both are equally effective.
