Abstract

Photokeratitis is the acute corneal response to ultraviolet radiation resulting in a painful keratopathy. We report a case series of 8 individuals with photokeratitis from ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure from Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide (HMI) lamp while shooting an advertisement campaign. 7 of these patients had bilateral superficial punctate keratitis(SPKs) that healed over a span of 2 days with topical lubricants and antibiotics. One of the patients had bilateral SPKs with a large epithelial defect in the right eye along with skin burns. A thorough literature review was performed to recognize the various light fixtures that are reported to have caused photokeratitis and a detailed public advisory of the same was prepared for general public awareness. We highlight the need for awareness, methods of prevention, clinical presentation, treatment and outcome in these cases.
