Abstract
Aim: To correlate Serum Urea (Ur) and Creatinine (Cr) levels with retinal outer segment disruption in Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR) patients. Methods: 78 newly diagnosed NPDR patients of different grades were included in this prospective study. All patients underwent SD-OCT examination for evaluation of External Limiting Membrane (ELM) and Ellipsoid Zone (EZ) disruption. Serum Ur and Cr levels were also measured. Results: The mean Serum Ur/Cr values (in mg/dl) in mild, moderate and severe NPDR patients were 26.30/0.9, 29.52/1.07 and 37.36/1.57 respectively. ELM-EZ disruption was present in all cases of Severe NPDR, 53% cases of Moderate NPDR and only 5% cases of Mild NPDR. Serum Ur and Cr levels showed significant positive correlation with the grade of ELM-EZ disruption (p=0.001 and p=0.0004 respectively) in NPDR patients. Conclusion: Increased Serum Ur and Cr levels may be used as additional markers for severity of retinal outer segment disruption in NPDR.
