Abstract
Objective: To assess the variation in retinal layer metrics by SDOCT in type 2 diabetics and to study the correlation of OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) parameters with HbA1c and duration of disease.
Methods: A case-control study of 120 patients. OCT parameters including inner retina from the Internal Limiting Membrane(ILM) to the proximal boundary of the Outer Nuclear Layer(ONL), Outer retina from proximal ONL boundary to the Retinal Pigment Epithelium(RPE) and Ellipsoid Zone(EZ)-RPE thickness were compared between cases and controls.
Results: Inner retinal layer metrics and EZ-RPE thickness showed significant reduction, while outer retina did not show any significant changes in diabetics. Significant correlation was noted among inner retinal layer metrics and EZ-RPE thickness with duration of diabetes.
Conclusion: SD-OCT showed alteration in retinal layer metrics due to retinal neurodegeneration in early stages of diabetes without any evidence of clinical Diabetic Retinopathy.
