Methods: Historical data from literature, NPCB & WHO website were collectively analyzed,discussed with the Project Director for the state of Tamil Nadu
Results: After launching of NPCB in 1976, the cataract surgical rates have reached higher numbers. Comprehensive eye screening especially in rural areas, spectacles for school children are effected successfully. Procurement & maintenance of equipments, strengthening of eye banks, promotion of educational

Conclusion: NPCB in India not alone helped achieving a high level of ophthalmic goals but also in training ophthalmologists within and outside of the country setting an example of a successful national program.
