Abstract
Glaucoma and Dementia are both known to affect elderly population. Both neurodegenerative diseases have multiple possible overlapping pathophysiologic mechanisms.
We screened 100 patients of Dementia in a tertiary care center for presence of Glaucoma which was confirmed on perimetry. Type of dementia and Glaucoma was evaluated. MMSE was used to assess severity of dementia and DDLS was used to grade severity of glaucoma.
60% patients had glaucoma, out of which 63% (38 patients) were undiagnosed earlier. 60% had POAG,24% PACG ,6 %NTG , 10% sec glaucoma. Type of dementia found with glaucoma was Alzheimer’s (61.6%) , Vascular (20%) Parkinson’s (10%) and others (8.3%). Significant correlation was found between MMSE and DDLS score in vascular glaucoma.
We conclude , glaucoma remains undiagnosed in many patients of Dementia. We also report occurrence of different types and stages of Glaucoma in different types of dementia which may help in better understanding of both the diseases.
