Abstract
PURPOSE
To report the characteristics of a large series of foreign bodies(FB) according to their material and location in orbit
METHODS
Retrospective study
RESULTS
It was a panorama of objects from trivial most namely, glass pieces, pellets, metallic nib of a ball pen, plastic tube, bullet of a rifle to substantial ones including newspaper foreign body, keyring, a measuring metallic weight, wood and the handle of a bike.
Metallic FBs were most common. Nonmetallic FBs were associated with globe dystopia, palpebral oedema & ptosis. Posterior orbit location was associated with globe dystopia & conjunctival haemorrhage. Intraconal location was associated with mydriasis & conjunctival haemorrhage with open globe injury.
CONCLUSION
The orbital FBs pose difficult diagnostic & therapeutic challenges. Management of such cases must be tailored according to their type & location & to clinical aspect of the patient, at times, calls for innovation in decision making & formulation of strategies.
