Abstract
A 42-year old male was referred for a suspected OSSN. LE showed a pinkish, circumscribed, nodular, firm mass over cornea extending from limbus to pupillary margin with prominent feeder vessels & episcleral vessels. Cornea was hazy with superficial & deep vascularization. UBM showed no scleral or intraocular involvement. Apart from the eyes, he had a striking facial appearance with furrowed skin, sparse eyebrow hair and purplish nodules over the ear pinna. He also had thick & dry scaly skin all over the body with thickening of ulnar nerve. With a strong clinical suspicion, he was referred to a Dermatologist for evaluation & was diagnosed to have Hansen’s disease. He was started on multi-drug therapy for the same
We suspect the corneal lesion to be a leproma, an inflammatory lesion consisting of acid-fast bacilli. We wait for the patient to return for biopsy
Conclusion: Keen observation & clinical examination beyond the eye could help in diagnosing such rare conditions & save one’s life!
