Abstract
Purpose: Orbital Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor with an aggressive course.
Methods: Retrospective, interventional, consecutive case series to assess the clinico-radiological & histopathological corelation.
Results: 35 patients (1% of all orbital tumours), median age 34(range14-63)y. Chronic proptosis(mean 10m) was seen in 33(94%), palpable mass 21(60%), located anteriorly 12(34%) or supero-medially 8(23%), with restricted motility in 2(5%). Excision biopsy was done in 33(94%) & incisional biopsy 2(6%), with histopathological confirmation. Adjuvant radiotherapy was given in 14(40%). Recurrence occurred in 10(38%), more 9(35%) in the non-radiated group (p=0.02). Re-excision & radiotherapy for recurrence achieved local tumor control in all, at a mean follow up of 10.9+6.9 y.
Conclusion:Accurate diagnosis, meticulous surgical handling, histopathological risk analysis & well-planned adjuvant therapy reduce local tumor recurrence & metastasis to ensure life salvage.
