Abstract
DR is a leading cause of vision loss. A periodical dilated fundoscopy is the gold standard screening approach, but poor referral is a limitation. Nailfold capillaroscopy, which analyses capillary microarchitecture may be helpful in diagnosing DR.
250 DM patients were included in the study with 50% DR. The parameters under study were capillary density, Tortuosity, Neoangiogenesis, Microhemorrhages, Abnormal forms and Avascular areas. We have correlated the fundus and capillaroscopic findings and compared them in patients with and without DR.
Reduced capillary density& tortuosity-100% of patients with PDR and in 90.9% and 81.8% respectively in cases of NPDR. Microhemorrhages & avascular areas-83.1% of PDR and 28.8% in NPDR.
Significant association with severity of DR, duration of diabetes and glycemic control was observed. Changes on nailfold capillaroscopy can be identified before the appearance of changes in fundus. Also, it is a cheap and non-invasive screening tool for DR.
